Garage Door Safety

Your garage door is the largest moving object in your house, and since the door normally moves slowly it may be hard for homeowners to notice a problem before it’s too late.  A garage door that is in needs of repair or that has not had maintenance should not be used. If you continue to use the garage door you can possibly cause more damage, which can end up costing you more in the end. A garage door that isn’t working properly can also be dangerous for people to be near or use as it can cause serious injuries.

Spring Safety

Ever wonder what that coil thingy is above your garage door? There are two types of counter balance systems. Extension Springs and Torsion Springs. Extension springs were an early generation system that was easy and inexpensive to install. However, due to the quality of the materials they did not last very long and would require frequent replacement. This type of spring would often break when you least expect it and if not installed properly with the use of Safety Cables sometimes damages would occur to walls and vehicles when the extension springs flew off.

Torsion springs have been used for decades as a more accurate way to counterbalance your garage door. This method provides smooth and reliable use of the door with ease. Should a torsion spring break it will often do so when the door is closed. This is when the spring is under tension. A garage door with a broken spring should not be used. You should also not expect the garage door opener to compensate for the broken spring. As mentioned in a previous blog entry, the springs on your door do 90%+ of the work. Depending on the size and model of door you may have one or two torsion springs. A double door with two springs often will break one spring and the other is usually not far behind. It is recommend to replace both at the same time.

This type of repair should only be done by an experienced technician. Our service techs are trained to replace your springs quickly and efficiently. Our service trucks are equipped with lengths of spring wire so we can gauge, measure and make on site. We do NOT sell premade springs. There is no one spring for every garage door. There are several wire size combinations that need to be strictly adhered to in order to properly balance your door. Anyone who sells you a premade spring is not doing you any service by installing something that is not going to work properly. Often they will increase adjustments on your opener to compensate which will wear out your opener much sooner than you would expect.

Door Maintenance

Door maintenance is often forgotten. As busy as our lives sometime becomes who thinks of doing maintenance on the garage door.  Well, when that door doesn’t open when you need to be somewhere is reason enough to have periodic maintenance done.

Lubrication is key! We recommend that your door be lubricated at least twice a year. This is really dependent on how much you use the door or what conditions in which your door is used or subjected to. We tell our customers a good reminder is when you change the clocks for daylight savings time. This is a great reminder to also lubricate the garage door. There are several products on the market that you can use and doesn’t have to be overly expensive. A can of lubricant will last you for years.

Should your schedule not permit you to do such maintenance, please give us a call. Our experienced technicians will service, lube and adjust your garage door quickly and efficiently. Should your door require repair or replacement parts, they carry most non-manufacturer specific parts on their service trucks. This allows us to repair most doors in a single visit. Should we need a part that is not stocked? We will use our vast distributor network of suppliers to try and source what is needed. If the parts are no longer available, we will take the time to explain this and give you replacement options to suit your budget or needs.
